| I have a 65 coupe that has been giving me starting/ignition problems for a week now. The car would run and then get hot and shut down. I troubleshot the cooling and fuel systems and they came out okay. Next I started working on the ignition system. I've replaced the resistor along the fender wall, the coil, the starter, the plugs and wires, and the ignition module. Now when I go to start the car, the starter continues to turn without the engine turning over and I have to disconnect the battery to get it to stop. Any recommendations on what I should do next? | If the starter is continuing to turn, It could be the bendix on the starter not allowing for the starter to engage your flywheel. Easiest way to check this is to remove the starter and jumper it directly to the battery with a set of jumper cables. Positive cable to the stud that bolted the wire to the starter, and negative to ground anywhere on the body of the starter. When you do this, have the starter on the ground with your foot on it to hold it still. When you touch your second cable to the starter, see if the bendix is kicking the starter gear out of the housing. If it's not, then it's probably the starter. If the starter works properly, then check to see if the flywheel has any teeth missing off of it before re-installing the sarter. It could also be the starter solenoid located on the passenger side inner fender. I've also seen a bad ignition switch do this. Also, make sure the positive post of the battery is not grounding out against the inner fender near the battery tray. Let me know what you find out. Good luck. Don. |

Don,
Thanks for the info. I ended up replacing both the starter and starter solenoid and that fixed the sticking problem. My timing was off and the car will start now, but shuts down after about 20 minutes. The ignition module keeps getting too hot. I'm thinking I need to replace the ignition switch or maybe even the distributor and see if that fixes the problem since everything else associated with the ignition system is now new. I've talked to a few people and they don't have any ideas as to why she would run that long and then shut down. Any thoughts? |
